CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Brother Shipmates, It’s hard to believe that our 2006
Reunion is behind us already. So much planning
and anticipation goes into these weekends, and you ALL provided so much incentive, support and cooperation that it truly felt
as a group …. let’s say “family”….event. I
am so proud of all you 9 ships-worth of brothers for stepping forward in so many ways. As mentioned from Thursday afternoon onward, “ this is
YOUR reunion”
and you took ownership. Great to see and experience! You came forward with hands-on set-up, suggestions, encouragement, photo-CDs, plus
a Newport Dealeys
Color Guard and even a Memorial Bagpiper! This was all terrific and I look ahead to Philadelphia in 2007 for even more “family” involvement. In fact I will be asking for outstanding “shipmate
stories” to add
to the well-accepted Captains’ Stories we all enjoyed so much. Yes, even now, weeks afterward, I am receiving phone calls of volunteering,
cards of thanks,
emails of appreciation and I am so very grateful that you have enjoyed yourselves.Check out the REUNION PHOTOS on the website www.newportdealeys.org. I think the tours of The U. S. Naval Academy and
Washington D. C. were great
but we could have used much more time to see everything. Perhaps it might just have tickled you enough to go back on your own someday
for a better
look & appreciation. No uncle can be more proud than I of my neice, Midshipman Emily Vanden Heuvel, for presenting her insight into
the typical Middie’s
day at The Academy in ’06. She and every other youngster serving this Great Nation of ours makes me proud to be an American! The general consensus was that our Friday business meeting worked
so much better
than waiting for Saturday that we intend to continue holding it on Friday before dinner. Speaking of Friday, wasn’t it an honor to have
the family of
a Newport Dealeys Ship’s namesake present for us? We thank Elizabeth Hartley, sons and grandson very
much.It goes
without saying that Mrs. Willis has become an integral part of our “family” and let’s not forget to petition to get the John
Harlan Willis postage
stamp approved. As an update, you should know that work
has begun with regard to quality production
of embroidered patches of your new Newport Dealeys Logo which we intend to have available in Philly. And follow through
has begun on an exciting
speaker for ’07 who has an interactive presentation we’ll all enjoy. So, we’re not just lollygagging in the great memories of ’06
but working toward
an even greater ’07 reunion for us all. If you missed getting an order form or information on obtaining the official illustration of your
ship you may
contact John Barrett at www.navyyardassociates.net Thank YOU for making the Newport Dealeys
Reunion 2006 so much fun! SHIPMATES FOREVER Jerry Skorch USS Joseph K Taussig Your
Chairman for 2007
